Welcome Letter 2017-2018

Hello! My name is Mr. Deyo (pronounced D·ee·yo, unlike the familiar Harry Belafonte song, Dayo :) and I will be your child’s Kindergarten teacher this year. I am sincerely looking forward to crafting experiences that reflect the interests, learning styles, and strengths of your child. I hope that children will find learning opportunities that elicit joy, wonder, challenge, empathy, community and global engagement, and problem solving throughout our days together.

A little more information about me: I have been a teacher for well over a decade, this is my 1st year teaching at Allen Brook and my third year teaching Kindergarten. I studied Early Childhood Education (B.S.) and Educational Leadership (M.Ed.) at UVM and my Vermont Educator’s Level II License spans 6 weeks of age-Grade 3. I was born in southern Vermont, attended public schools through High School, and have lived in the Burlington area for the past 20 years (we have lived in Williston for the past 10 years too). I am also the oldest of four children and now live with my family (Bethany-Spouse, Johnathan-10, and Madeleine-7). I am deeply interested in the many ways children learn, along with nature-based experiences, technology-rich opportunities, self-directed learning, mindfulness, empathy building, math and literacy. I speak a little bit of French too. This summer I plan to spend a lot of time in the classroom preparing for your arrival!

Kindergarten is a significant transition in the lives of children and families.  I will be utilizing a class blog, a classroom Twitter feed, Seesaw and other digital tools to share daily experiences and children’s work with you and others. Rest assured, I will respect all confidentiality requests. In addition, you can email me at adeyo@cvsdvt.org if you have any questions, concerns, ideas, or other feedback about your child or our experiences. Stay tuned for more information about classroom communication.

Now that you know a little bit about me, please tell me more about you! Here are a few questions for the kids (Parents can help too!). Please email your answers to adeyo@cvsdvt.org.

  1. What are you interested in? (ex. reading, writing, math, specific sports or all sports, animals, gardening, hiking, building, making things, technology, etc. Anything is helpful.)
  2. How do you like to learn and practice new things? (ex. sitting, standing, wiggling, kneeling, etc.)
  3. Do you have family cultural practices that would helpful for me to know about?
  4. For the Parents:  How do you or how would you like to access information about school related events and opportunities? (ex. Allen Brook and/or cvsdvt.org websites, the School Bell newsletter, blogs, email, paper notices, etc.) Are there certain social media services that you would like to receive classroom updates through? (ex. G+, Twitter, Instagram, Remind text messages via phone, etc.)
  5. Are you interested in a classroom open house prior to the school year?
  6. Would you be interested or available to use Skype, FaceTime, or other video conferencing software to join the class?  Or join in person?

Last, but not least, a request for help: I am looking for a few recycled and natural materials for our classroom.  We will be collecting caps and lids from various containers such as milk, juice, other liquids, salsa, jam jars, and more for year long math and art related experiences.  Please send these lids/caps in with our child as they become available!

Also, one of my favorite things to do is to gather stones as a memento from the various places I visit. As you play this summer, please consider finding a stone and jotting a quick note about the place where you found it and the date. These too will be used for a year-long project in the classroom.  See image below for examples of stones and caps.

Rest assured, there will be more information about these and other opportunities this year. In the meantime, I am truly looking forward to meeting you all and beginning the school year! Happy summer!

Respectfully,

Adam Deyo
Kindergarten Teacher
Allen Brook School
