Recycle Rhonda!

We had a special guest join us today! Rhonda Mace from the Chittenden Solid Waste District, otherwise known as Recycle Rhonda, spent some of the morning talking about Reducing, Reusing, and Recycling materials. Here are some notes:

1 landfill  in VT, it is the size of 3 Allen Brook School’s

Reduce by composting and recycling
Reuse- such as reusing caps you sent in for projects!
Recycle-
  • Nothing smaller than a squirrel's head or your fist can go into recycling bin.
  • The rest goes in the trash.
  • Combine clean tin foil into a big ball the size of your fist, then it can be recycled with everything else.
  • Flippy floppy plastic (eg. sandwich bags) go in the trash, or bring them to a supermarket and deposit in recycling bin
  • Hard plastic goes in the recycling. Must be cleaned.
  • Brown paper towel in the compost preferably, or trash. Only paper without paint or other manufactured materials.
  • Two different materials stuck together such as metal and plastic, like food wrappers, need to go in the trash.
  • Plastic bottles with caps attached can go in the recycling bin now

We use 100% recycled paper towel at school, that then goes into the compost.
Trees make air, oxygen.
1 tree provides enough oxygen for 4 people.
They help the earth stay in place.
Provides food us and habitat.
