Day 31

A visit from Julianna Tyson of the Winooski Valley Park District to learn about birds. We learned:

Some birds are heading south because it is colder here, it is warmer there.
Some birds are preparing to leave by packing some food in their bellies as fat.
It looks like little white pockets or patches under their feathers.
They can double their weight.
The fat turns into energy to fly south where there is food and water.

Birds are remembering where the food and water are now so that they have a food source.

A group of birds is called a flock.

The chickadee flocks knows where the food is.

Why travel in a big group?

  • Stay together
  • More protected
  • Use body heat to stay warm
  • Won’t get lost
  • More eyes to see
  • More ears to listen
  • More noses to smell food
Woodpeckers wrap their tongues around their brain to protect it when they are pecking wood!
