Fungus, Bacteria, and Invertebrates with @rhowdyrecycler

Many thanks to Recycle Rhonda for joining us to talk about the FBI of composting (Fungus, Bacteria, and Invertebrates). Yet again she captivated the group, bringing Fran the Fungus and Bernie the Bacteria this time! She reminds us to ask, "Would Bernie and Fran want to eat it?" when considering items to put in the compost bucket. Check out the difference between putting a carrot in the compost for two months and leaving it in a landfill for 10 years!

From carrot to compost in two months

A 10 year old carrot from the landfill (it still had not decomposed!)

What a difference a day makes too. The cooler weather definitely lent itself to a smoother day overall. Lots of work with shapes and number composition during Math this morning. Kids practiced reading pictures with Owly graphic novels and a corresponding tag story by the group for four of the Owly images (one child tells a part of the story, tags the next person who adds more, and so on around the circle). Yet another reminder that all kids are readers in different ways. Independent and Partner Reading lasted the longest yet, stamina is growing!  In Writing Workshop, small books were introduced and kids read them for Seesaw journal entries at the end. We wrapped up outside too! Oh yeah, we released another butterfly as well.
